What to expect from your hair loss consultations
This is a service specialising in non-surgical hair restoration. The initial consultation is to assess and receive an initial opinion and treatment plan. There is then a follow up consultation within one month to discuss the treatment plan and a further consultation to monitor your progress within 6-12 months.
This is a trichology clinic from the perspective of a practising medical professional. The majority of Trichology Clinics in the UK do not have a medical professional providing direct input to the service. You will be provided with up to date advice based on the evidence available.
Depending on the reason for the hair loss a variety of approaches will be taken to restore your hair or slow down the progression of hair. These methods include advising on medications, nutritional or supplement changes, how to seek further assistance from your GP to obtain further investigations and when a referral to a dermatologist is needed for biopsy of the scalp or for more potent medications.
The clinic supplies wigs and hair pieces and wig care products. Advice on cosmetically camouflaging hair loss is also available if required.
Treatments such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) are available at the clinic. You will be advised as to whether these are suitable for your type of hair loss.
If it is thought that you are experiencing Male of Female Pattern Hair Loss, Telogen Effluvium (Hair Shedding) or Alopecia Areata (an autoimmune condition) you will be offered the option of a TrichoTest, a DNA test which will help to personalise your treatment options. The recommendations will be in the form of supplements recommended or medications recommended. The clinic will be able to prescribe the necessary medications.
If you would like the additional option of obtaining formal measurements of your hair growth or loss the TrichoLab report is also available.
Hair loss can be temporary and reversible or scarring (permanent). It can be caused for a variety of reasons including stress, nutrition, lifestyle, health issues, genetic and hair care practices.
The approach to treatment is to offer evidence based advice and treatment recommendations. Where this is not available, the approach will be guided by the approach taken by reputable organisations.
The initial consultation can be virtual or face to face. Follow up appointments are free of charge.
Before the consultation
If the consultation is virtual it is essential to have good quality photographs of your hair loss/scalp condition before the consultation. Photographs of the scalp from the front, side, top and back views showing the condition that you are concerned about should be be emailed to email@example.com or sent via WhatsApp on 07795142354.
You will be emailed a Pre- consultation questionnaire. It is helpful if you are able to complete it before the consultation as this helps to make use of the time available.
If you are able to obtain a Summary Printout from your GP via email which includes the results of recent blood tests that would be ideal. You are entitled to this information free of charge under the General Data Protection regulations.
You will be asked for your date of birth and address. Please be prepared to show photographic proof of identification and proof of address in case a prescription needs to be created.
In the majority of cases a face to face examination is not always necessary – but there will be some occasions where a face to face examination is needed so that the hair and scalp can be examined in more detail.
The initial consultation
30 – 60 minutes will be spent finding out about your hair loss/scalp concern, its effect on you, your past medical history, medication history, hair care practices history, family history, nutrition and lifestyle.
If you attend the consulatino face to face, your scalp will be examined at high magnification and your hair will be examined.
At the end of the consultation you will be given a verbal opinion of the condition and recommendations as to what needs to be done next. This could include:
- Suggested blood tests to discuss with GP (These can be arranged via the clinic if needed)
- TrichoTest may be advised to personalise which can be prescribed treatment
- If there is a possibility of a scarring form of hair loss a referral to a dermatologist will be recommended
- If additional imaging is desired a TrichoLab report can be arranged. This involves taking detailed high magnification photographs of the scalp at designated points. This needs to be done face to face.
After the initial consultation: early and later follow up appointments included
You will be emailed a written summary of the consultation within 7 days.
If you would like to explore further services such as cosmetic camouflage, wigs and hair pieces, you are welcome to do so. A complementary 15 minute face to face follow up within the first month to discuss your treatment plan and then a further consultation within 6-12 months is included.
If you decide to have a TrichoTest, that can be arranged. If it is taken within 6 months of the consultation the consultation charge will be taken off the cost of the TrichoTest report.
PRP treatment is usually done at 1,2,3 and then 6 monthly. A detailed consutation form for the PRP is available in clinic if appropriate. This can also be downloaded from the website.
You may wish to document your progress more precisely after the consultation using TrichoLab technology. which takes detailed measurement of the hair and looks at the cscalp. A second opinion from internationally recognised hair doctors is included within the price of a TrichoLab report. (TrichoLab only work with qualified medical practitioners)
