Crewe Hair and Skin Clinic

The beard area can experience several cosmetic problems including razor bumps, thin hair, frontal fibrosing alopecia and alopecia areata of the beard area. If the hair loss is patchy, a diagnostic hair loss consultation service should be booked.

Razor bumps

This is a rash in the beard area triggered by shaving.

There are a few different approaches to treating depending on your lifestyle and budget.

This clinic’s preferred option is to use chemical peels preceded by a period of at least 2 -6 weeks of skin care at home.

Thin beard hair

Some men aren’t able to grow a thick beard.

An option for helping beard hair to grow thicker is the polynucleotide injectable treatment. It is a product based on active polynucleotides specially designed for skin renewal and bio-restructuring. It is a bio-revitalizing product. The treatment is fairly new and acts on three levels: lifting, antioxidation and hydration. Treatments are performed in a series of 4 sittings every 15-30 days. The lifting effect after the treatment usually lasts up to 18 months.  It comes in different strengths. The medium strength can be used for beard hair.

Beard alopecia areata

Multiple therapies have been identified as effective treatments for beard alopecia areata  that can be provided by a dermatologist.  This clinic will complement rather than replace that.

Treatments that may be available from a dermatologist include  topical or injected corticosteroids.  Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, lasers, minoxidil, photodynamic therapy, and topical immunotherapy may be used for men who have more resistant or widespread hair loss.

It is important to understand that alopecia areata is a very unpredictable condition, so results cannot be guaranteed.

Case studies suggest that it would also be useful to check thyroid function and for diabetes, Helicobacter pylori infection  and autoimmune conditions.

This clinic would recommend:

  1. Platelet Rich Plasma:  Treatment in clinic once a month for 3 months then every 3-6 months thereafter as required.
  2. Topical prescribed medications.
  3. TrichoTest to tailor topical medications and supplements based on genetic profile

Other beard conditions

Occasionally a hair loss condition called Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia can present as hair loss in the beard.  If this condition is suspected a TrichoLab image will be recommended.
