Dr Ingrid Wilson, the clinic director created Crewe Hair and Skin Clinic in 2017. Her professional and personal experiences feed into how her trichology (hair and scalp) consultations and aesthetics/skin care consultations are structured.
Dr Wilson obtained her medical degree from Liverpool University in 1995, after completing an honours degree in Cell Biology. Following a range of clinical posts in the North West of England she qualified as a General Practitioner in 1999. After gaining her Masters in Public Health in 2001, She qualified as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine in 2006 and is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health. She has worked part time for the NHS as a freelance GP since 2008, and has also worked as a Consultant in Public Health Medicine in London and nationally including leadership roles in alcohol, drugs and sexual health.
After personal experience of hair loss she realised that, like many GPs she had received less than 2 hours’ worth of training on hair loss before qualifying. In 2010, after being unable to find a course for GPs of suitable depth, she embarked on training in Trichology with the Institute of Trichologists. She was the first practising doctor in the organisation’s 100 year history to do so. She gained a distinction in both years, and was awarded the John Mason Memorial Prize for Excellence, which is only awarded when there is a ‘candidate of high enough calibre to merit it’.
In 2012, after completing the course she began a process of continuing to update in hair restoration from multiple perspectives by joining organisations and societies that had different perspectives (dermatologists, GPs, cosmetic scientists, Trichologists, aesthetic practitioners and Hair Transplant surgeons)
After gaining further experience in Trichology, including with the clinic at the Institute of Trichologists when it was based in Tooting, and The Private Clinic of Harley Street she realised that she needed to create a unique environment which combined the traditions of trichology with the technology from the aesthetics sector, as well as her experience as a General Practitioner. This has led to a distinct menu of non-surgical regenerative treatments .which are offered following a detailed consultation process.
The path into aesthetics began with an opportunity to train in electrolysis for permanent hair removal, followed by training in electrolysis for blemish removal. Along with the skin camouflage training to help cover burns, birthmarks and scars contact an interest was sparked in learning about how practitioners were using medical and aesthetic technology to address cosmetic skin concerns that are not covered by the NHS.
Following attendance at a range of aesthetic conferences, and approaches from strangers and colleagues it was becoming clearer that there was a significant gap in the traditional GP model beyond treating illness and disease when it comes to hair and skin. There was no scope to offer patients proactive, aesthetic solutions in the NHS setting. To do this, an outward looking approach , using the experience of experts from abroad feeds into the approach taken by this clinic.
The clinic evolved to help to bridge that gap by empowering clients with advanced skincare and aesthetic technology that addresses common cosmetic concerns and restores skin confidence.
As with her NHS GP role, the approach is inclusive and acknowledges the different cosmetic skin conditions which affect skin of colour more. There is a well recognised lack of data and research which leads to less favourable outcomes.
Dr Wilson has been honoured to be involved in projects that are inclusive of all hair and skin types including with the Pharma Hermetic Hair Recovery Programme study of 2024/5 which included women with the full range of hair types. The experience was used as part of teaching students of the World Trichology Society in the United States. The results of the study have been presented to a variety of professional audiences and can be viewed in a report.
The clinic was also part of the UK wide preparation to launch the Evidence Based Skin Care launch in the UK of Enlighten Gold and was able to gain experience in women with skin of colour in the UK.
