What are dermal fillers?
Fillers are ‘gel-like’ cross-linked synthetic materials made up of Hyaluronic acid (a natural component of our own skin that can be synthesised). They can restore & revolumise skin & facial contours to form a more youthful appearance and are longer lasting than Botulinum Toxin (including Botox) injections. They can also smooth lines and wrinkles, firm key facial structures and define the shape of certain structures e.g. lips, and improve the appearance of a sunken appearance under the eyes.
Static lines and volume loss are best treated with dermal fillers. There are many different products on the market, and unlike Botulinum Toxin injections (including Botox), they are not prescription-based. The different filler types vary in thickness and consistency, coinciding with their varying indications. This clinic will tend to use fillers once other options have been excluded.
More recently, people have been looking for a more natural look, so polynucleotides and skin boosters such as Belotero Revive, Profhilo and Definisse Hydrobooster be considered for this.
On average, dermal fillers can last anything between 6-18 months depending on product, depth injected, area treated, body metabolism of product and environmental factors such as heat. Recent studies have indicated that fillers can be traced for up to 8 years.
Again, unlike Botulinum Toxin injections, Hyaluronic acid-based fillers are reversible with the enzyme ‘Hyalase’. The nature of injecting also varies to Botox, with more force required to inject, and different techniques used. Most new filler ranges include the local anaesthetic Lidocaine to help reduce the sensation of pain whilst injecting.
This clinic uses primarily Definisse and also Belotero.
Areas treated will be intended to treat loss of volume. Temples are not treated at this clinic with fillers.
An aesthetics/skin care consultation is required before a filler procedure. This is to ensure suitability for the procedure and to explore alternative treatments including skin care or other aesthetic treatments which may be a more suitable alternative to fillers. It can be better to prepare the skin with polynucleotides before a filler is done
