What is Regenera Activa?
Regenera is a cuting edge and one of a kind technology that can provide a quick and effective method of regenerating bio-tissues.
At this clinic it is mainly used for hair stimulation.
Its purpose is to stimulate the growth of hair, thicken hair, reduce hair loss and boost the regenerative process.
This treatment is used primarily in people in the earlier stages of balding (male pattern hair loss and female pattern hair loss). Practitioners are monitoring its use on other forms of hair loss.
It can be used as preparation for hair transplant surgery. About 6 months before is considered to be a good time. Some hair transplant surgeons use it during the hair transplant procedure with some hair transplant surgeons if done early enough. It can also be considered if PRP has not been successful.
The concept is similar to PRP except that that growth factors are from the scalp rather than the blood, so they are more specific. It is a good option to consider if PRP has not work.
Just like PRP, the procedure injecting the growth factors into the skin of the scalp. There are no chemical, no enzymes – just mechanical disaggregation. It is a procedure that takes around 30 minutes in a single session. The Regenera device is a patented medical device which is CE Marked.
What science is it based on?
Growth factors are obtained from the skin at the back of your scalp, in the area that never goes bald. This is the closest resemblance you can obtain to stem cells within a clinical environment.
The tissue is obtained in a standardised way through controlled mechanical disaggregation. This means that the cell structures are not disrupted.
The process activates progenitor (ancestor) cells in scalp tissue. It uses the body’s own tissue regeneration processes to stimulate growth centres in the hair follicles, strengthening hairs that have become smaller and finer from balding.
Current evidence suggests that it helps with blood supply to the hairs in the scalp, and when used in conjunction with hair transplant can help reduce scarring.
Why haven't I heard about it?
The technology was created in 2013. The technology is manufactured in Italy and has been approved in Europe, the United States, Japan, Korea and some of the South East Asia countries where a more holistic approach to hair restoration is taken in clinics rather than focussing on hair transplants. The technology is now being used as part of the hair transplant procedure in some clinic with good results.
Is Regenera Activa Exosome treatment?
There has recently been a buzz in the hair loss world about Exosomes in aesthetics. Definitions of what exosomes are vary – but it is basically about cellular signalling. Exosomes come from a variety of different sources including plant and animal derived. The US FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) does not approve the use of laboratory grown exosome products. The use of exosomes from human donors is also prohibited in many nations. The safest source would be from oneself which what the Regenera Activa technology is based on.
Further published research about Regenera Activa and Exosomes is available here (please note that you will need to leave your details to receive a download).
What changes should be expected in the hair after a treatment?
After a treatment the likely changes are:
- Increase in hair diameter (seen more in the frontal area than at the crown)
- A decrease in hair loss in 6 weeks
- Increasing thickness of hair at 3 months, 6 months and then a year
The images below show the results of treatment in a client who had one treatment at this clinic. He has noticed that his hair has actually got darker in colour and has reported that other people have noticed an increase in the density of his hair. He went on to have a hair transplant. Some practitioners have noticed less grey hair.
Current information indicates that this treatment is likely to benefit 60% of cases of balding.

How does the process work in this clinic?
This clinic prices this treatment competitively. However it is important that this treatment is being done for the right person at the right time.
Before this procedure can take place a diagnostic hair loss consultation needs to take place during which a TrichoLab image is taken.
A set of hair loss blood tests should also be done before the procedure. These are done through Medichecks.
A whole person approach is taken to the process, because the evidence shows that a combination of approaches is needed for success which can include lifestyle tweaks, appropriate supplementation where there is a deficiency and prescribed medications.
What does the treatment involve?
An area of the back of the scalp is shaved.
The area is cleansed with antiseptic.
Local anaesthetic is injected into the area. Local anaesthetic cream is applied to the area of the scalp which will be injected into. This takes 20 minutes to start working.
Small areas of skin 2.5mm in diameter are taken from the back area of the scalp. These are punch biopsies.
Any bleeding is controlled and a steristrip is applied across the areas. No stitch is needed.
The tissue is then mechanically disaggregated using the Rigenera Machine (this is the brand of Regenera) in physiological saline. The Riginera system consist of 2 components, the Rigenera machine and the Rigenera kit. Rigenera Kits are discposable medical devices called Rigeneracons.
The device performs a selective filtration, collecting only the cells and tissue particles smaller than 80 micrometres.
The resulting solution is reinjected into the scalp at a depth of 4mm
A deep mesotherapy technique is used to inject the solution point by point.
When are the effects most likely to be seen?
It depends on each case: age, concomitant diseases, and genetic factors… as male and female pattern hair loss are multifactorial conditiosn.
Microscopically, a significant reduction in the number of miniaturized hairs can be observed within three months.
By the fourth month, changes in the quality and number of hairs are visible to the naked eye, as well as a higher hair density.
It is important to stress the importance of diagnosing the hair loss, as the cause of hair loss for the protocol to be effective.
By around 9-12 months, a difference should be noticed.
Does the technology work on all types of alopecia?
The diagnosis is essential, as indicated by the protocol.
AMT® has only proved efficacy on male and female pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia).
For this reason, it is important to know whether these types of hair loss are accompanied by another pathology such as telogen effluvium, an inflamed scalp or another pathology, since it can fully affect the success of the procedure.
It is relevant not to have advanced hair loss, as well as a normal blood tests.
It is under these conditions that AMT® helps to slow down the evolution of androgenetic alopecia in a biological way.

Can Regenera Activa be used in women?
The majority of early research was done on men, but a recent study published in 2024 indicated its value in women with female pattern hair loss too. Please read more here.
A published preliminary report from 2023 looking at a group of 25 patients from the age of 23 years to the age of 64 years, found that:
- Females’ hair density mean change were higher than males (P = 0.034).
- However, males’ density terminal mean change were higher than females (P = 0.031).
- Telogen mean change significantly associated with age, there was significantly higher Telogen mean change for patients aged higher than 35 years old (6.10 ± 0.93) than for patients with age 35 or lower (p-value = 0.019).
- Smoking status did not seem to be associated with mean change of hair parameters expect for ratio terminal hair, the mean change of ratio terminal hair was significantly higher for non-smoker patients than smoker patients (p-value = 0.001)
Are there any large studies on the effectiveness of Regenera Activa?
The largest study appears to be from 2021 of 140 adults with androgenetic alopecia (balding). The setting was a dermatology clinic in Saudi Arabia and involved 18-65 year old males and females.
Pre- to post-intervention assessment showed favourable changes in all positive and negative trichometry parameters, including growth of an average 5–7 new hairs per cm2 of scalp and an increase in the average hair thickness by 1.6–1.9μm, which is reflected by an increase in the percentage of thick hairs and proportional decrease in the percentage of thin hairs.
Can Regenera Activa replace a hair transplant?
Some hair loss clinics are using this technology alongside hair transplants as experience shows that it provides a better environment for implanted hair. It can provide a synergistic effect. Experience from those using it indicates that it speeds recovery in the donor area and less scarring.
Theoretically it could be helpful to have a Regenera procedure 6 months before a hair transplant to get the benefit of both procedures.
The use of polynucleotides as a primer before and after the Regenera Activa procedure could potentially boost the results based on the theory of both these treatments and the polynucleotides would act on thickening the hairs.
How much does the treatment cost?
The initial treatment itself is currently priced at £2000.
The treatment may need to be repeated again if after 12-18 months, but this can be left for longer. The best time to repeat the treatment is when you notice that the beneficial effect is beginning to wear off.
Why do I need to pay for a consultation before the procedure?
Other clinics providing this service offer a free consultation before the procedure.
This clinic does not agree with that approach because it provides better value to clients to ensure that all the factors contributing to hair loss are being addressed, as well as making sure that the right type of hair loss is being treated with Regenera technology. Medical treatments guided by a TrichoTest may be appropriate to support the desired outcome from this procedure. The TrichoTest DNA test helps to personalise the recommendations for topical medications and supplements. Tweaks in diet and lifestyle are also important.
Should I have a blood test before the procedure?
It is recommended that you have the screening blood tests which helps to investigate the possible causes of thinning hair and hair loss. This can be arranged through the clinic as a skin prick test which is done at home.
What needs to be done before the procedure?
- Do not drink alcohol 48 hours before the REGENERA treatment.
- Avoid taking Aspirin or anti-inflammatories for 3 days before the treatment.
- If prone to bruising it is recommended that Arnica tablets are taken 7 days prior to treatment.
- You should drink plenty of water to maintain hydration.
- Come with a clean scalp. This clinic encourages the use of Scalp Fit shampoo.
- Eat some solid food before the appointment. (Thai Corner across the road is very convenient), if the appointment is timed in the early afternoon.
What should be expected after the procedure?
- After the REGENERA treatment, you can expect to be sore. Soreness is typical and will resolve itself after 24 – 48 hours. After few days also redness, burning, itching and swelling will probably be gone.
- Do not wash your head for 24 hours
- Do not drink alcohol 48 hours after the treatment.
- You should refrain from exercise or any strenuous activity for 48 hours (up to one week is ideal). Exercise will cause you to sweat and excrete the solution out of the pores of the skin, which will decrease the effectiveness of the treatment. After this period, exercise is recommended to circulate the products.
- Do not wash or take a shower for at least 8 hours after treatment. Do not take hot baths for 48 hours after treatment.
- Sun exposure must be avoided for 48 hours after the treatment and until bruising subsides. If it is necessary to go into the sun, use SPF 30 plus at all times.
- You could use Arnica gel or cream to help with the bruising.
- You should drink plenty of water to maintain hydration, as some fluid is lost in the fat after treatment. This can sometimes make you feel dizzy or faint.
- A low carbohydrate, low sugar, natural healthy eating programme should be followed.
How soon after treatment can topical medication be used?
The scalp should be expected to heal after 3 days, so if the scalp is healthy then topical medication (e.g. Minoxidil, finasteride, prostaquinon, latanoprost, melatonin, spironolactone, cetirizine) can be restarted.
Why should it be considered instead of PRP for hair loss?
Like PRP, the person is both a donor and a recipient of tissue. It is a minimally invasive procedure.
Advantages over PRP
- Specific rather than general growth factors
- Same embryonic origin of the receptor tissue (scalp tissue rather than blood)
- New blood vessel formation (Neovascularization) rather than increasing the blood vessel diameter
- Single treatment repeated at 6-8 weeks if needed then annually if needed.
Are there lower cost alternatives available at this clinic?
There are several other lower cost alternatives which require more frequent visits to the clinic including:
- Polynucleotide (useful pre and post hair transplant) – also a primer for Regenera Activa
- Purasomes – Exosome treatment
- Platelet Rich Plasma
- WOW fusion hair loss treatment
- RRS XL mesotherapy
- Pharma Hermetic (peptide) hair recovery programme
- Microneedling with XCellaris Protwist
What else can Regenera Technology be used for?
It is also licensed to be used for re-pigmentation in stable vitiligo.
Research is ongoing about whether it can be used in other forms or hair loss, such as early forms of scarring hair loss.
Doctors say that the technology can be used to treat skin scars, burns and wound healing.
What are the side effects?
Complications and risks of this intervention are rare, but they do exist and include: Pain from the procedure, Numbness, tingling, abnormal scars, insufficient result.
The micrografts taken are just 2.5mm in diameter. This is so small that a stitch is not needed. The photos here show how the skin has healed well after a treatment. The area from where the grafts are taken are shaved at the time of the procedure.
As in hair transplants, no hair will grow again in the area from which the hair is taken.
