Female Pattern Hair Loss
(Female Androgenetic Alopecia)
There are actually 2 age peaks for women for female pattern hair loss:
- Early onset in the 3rd decade
- Late onset in the 5th decade, which is more associated with the menopause.
The appearance is usually a widening of the central parting while retaining the front of the hair line.
Sometimes other hair loss conditions can be present at the same time that can be contributing to the overall appearance of the hair.
How the clinic can help
This type of hair loss is not dealt with in the NHS. Dealing with hair loss without using surgery needs a variety of approaches. There are other hair loss conditions which can be confused with female pattern hair loss, so this clinic will only go ahead with treatments if a diagnostic hair loss consultation has taken place. At the diagnostic hair loss consultation the clinic will precisely document the hair and scalp using TrichoLab technology. This is different to the scalp magnification used by many trichology clinics because the image uses polarised light which allows structures under the surface of the skin to be seen. There is also the added reassurance of a second opinion from internationally recognised hair doctors. This technology is used in hair transplant clinics that wish to accurately measure the effect of the hair transplant operation.
The consultation process will advise you on how you can address multiple factors contributing to your hair and scalp health including lifestyle or health issues. The consultation process will also help you to select which of the treatments below is more appropriate for you.
Medical Treatments
A medical approach can be taken to female pattern hair loss. A consultation is required before prescribing of topical and oral medications for hair loss which could include low dose oral minoxidil and/or spironolactone if suitable.
TrichoTest
There may be better alternatives to Minoxidil based on your genetic profile. The TrichoTest DNA test for hair loss will enable personalised treatment for certain types of hair loss including androgenetic alopecia (female and male pattern hair loss), telogen effluvium and mild alopecia areata. Recommendations for topical medications and appropriate suppplements are made.
Regenera Activa
Regenera Activa is the ideal treatment for people who either want to avoid a hair transplant or who want to prepare their scalp for a hair transplant. It is best done around 6 months before the hair transplant procedure along with medication to optimise results.
In this treatment, growth factors are obtained from a biopsy at the back of your scalp. This is better than Platelet Rich Plasma treatment because it is the closest resemblance you can obtain to stem cells within a clinical environment.
Treatment can be repeated at 6 months, but results can last 12-18 months. Maintenance can take place every year or few years. This is worth considering for people in the early stages of hair loss who are considering a hair transplant.
Polynucleotides
Polynucleotides are bio-revitalizing products specially designed for skin renewal and bio-restructuring. The treatment is fairly new and acts on three levels: lifting, antioxidation and hydration. It can be used to thicken eyebrow and scalp hair (as well as beard hair in men).
There are various brands of polynucleotides. This clinic uses Plenyhage, Plinest and Nucleofill
Studies have suggested that Platelet Rich Plasma(PRP) is a useful adjunct in managing female pattern hair loss. It is now becoming part of the treatment protocol in some hair loss clinics for androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and telogen effluvium. The treatment is done monthly for the first 6 months then every 3-6 months as maintenance therapy. The principle behind it is that your body’s own growth factors taken from your own blood will help support the hair growth.
The Pharma Hermetic Hair Recovery Programme is an in-clinic treatment can be used as a standalone treatment or alongside PRP treatments.
The in clinic treatment is done approximately every 7- 10 days on 5 occasions.
There is a shampoo, lotion in spray and nourishing hair mask to supplement the treatments in clinic.
