What is a chemical peel?
A chemical peel is a minimally invasive procedure which improves the appearance of skin. During the procedure your doctor, or a specially trained aesthetician under the supervision of a doctor, carefully applies combinations of powerful solutions to remove dead skin cells. The solutions penetrate into the skin, causing dead skin cells to peel off. The new skin is smoother and more refined-looking.
There are many types of chemical peel preparations and the right preparationfor you depends on your skin type and desired results. Light or superficial chemical peels usually consist of alpha and beta hydroxy acids, such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid, that are combined to improve the appearance of:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Mild to moderate photoageing
- Rough, uneven skin.

Are there additional considerations in skin of colour?
Yes – particularly for clients who have melasma. This is considered moderate risk , so 2-4 weeks of a hydroquinone equivalent and sunscreen is recommended before the procedure if there is likely to be rebound hyperpigmentation after the procedure.
The Neostrata Enlighten Mandelic peel is considered lower risk – although priming with a pigment suppressing agent may be recommended in the weeks before the procedure.
The Vi Peels are also specifically formulated for skin of colour, although pigment suppressing skincare is also ideal before the procedure.
