Milia (commonly and incorrectly referred to as whiteheads) are tiny, white raised blemishes, usually occuring on the face. They usually look pearly white, round and are sometimes hard.
They lie very close to the surface of the skin so are receptive to treatment with electrolysis. In fact, in some circles, this is considered to be the most effective approach as it causes minimal skin damage, with a decreased risk of scarring often linked to other treatments such as manual piercing of the skin.
This clinic is able to offer treatment by using targeted heat through a fine needle in the electrolysis process.
As well as physical removal using electrolysis, this clinic will be able to advise on appropriate skin care. It is important to know that older milia will be harder to remove. This is why during the first appointment a test of 1 or 2 milia is done.
If there are many milia and they are very close together, then the approach will be to gradually thin out the milia. Some larger milia may require repeated treatments.
People with milia often have dry skin, so appropriate skin care will be advised on during the initial appointment.
For widespread lesions, topical retinoids may be helpful (over the counter topical retinoids may not be strong enough). Chemical peels or dermabrasion have been reported to be effective for widespread milia.
